Wedding photographer & videographer on the Redwood Coast

Sunrise on the Redwood Coast in July is 05:56 and sunset is 20:471, which leaves a long evening between the trees and the shore. We photograph and film weddings and elopements here as one team, from a grove ceremony to a full day on the coast.

In short

We photograph and film weddings and elopements on the Redwood Coast as one team, with an independent partner photographer matched to it. Redwood National Park asks for a permit for every wedding or elopement, and the California license has no waiting period, so the permit date is what sets your timeline. The price list arrives within one business day.

We cover elopements among the trees, small ceremonies on the bluffs and full-day weddings along the coast, plus two-day weekends when families travel in.

Collections

Every collection comes as photo, video, or both, with the same team on the day. Half day covers an elopement or a small ceremony and portraits; Full day runs from getting ready to the first hour of the reception; Two days adds a rehearsal dinner, a welcome evening or a next-morning session. Travel to Redwood Coast is built into the quote, not added later.

Prices depend on the date, the team and how far we travel, so we send a price list for Redwood Coast rather than publishing one number for every town. Ask for it below; it arrives within one business day.

The day

The day,as we shoot it on the Redwood Coast

Wedding detail

We build a July wedding around the permit and the light. The sun is up from 05:56 to 20:471, and the average July high at the Crescent City weather station is 65.4 °F2, so wraps and jackets belong in the plan, whatever the calendar says. This sample day suits a ceremony of up to 20 people3.

  1. Getting ready, wherever you are staying: rings, shoes, the letter you wrote each other.
  2. A first look and couple portraits at the ceremony site, before your guests arrive.
  3. Ceremony at High Bluff Overlook, a pre-approved national park site. Our crew is listed on your permit as support personnel3, and the officiant wears a small lavalier microphone so the vows are on the film.
  4. Family groups, kept short so the light and the guests' patience both last, then everyone heads off. The national park allows no food service or alcohol3, so the meal happens elsewhere.
  5. Beach portraits at Gold Bluffs Beach, where a free day-use permit is needed from May 15 to September 154.
  6. The last hour before sunset for the two of you, on the bluffs or in the trees.

Rain is a winter story here: the Crescent City station records 11.51 in in January and 0.19 in in July2. For a July date we plan for dry ground and cool wind; for an October or January date we agree a covered fallback with you and photograph the forest wet.

Where we shoot on the Redwood Coast

These are the backdrops we use for portraits and ceremonies, chosen for light and for what the permits allow. None of them is a venue, and each comes with rules we walk you through.

  • Fern Canyon a canyon in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park with 50 ft (15 m) walls covered in ferns and Home Creek running through it.5
  • Gold Bluffs Beach the beach day-use area that holds the Fern Canyon trailhead.4
  • Tall Trees Grove reached from the Tall Trees Trailhead, which asks for a free permit all year.4
  • Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park old-growth redwoods along the Smith River, about 9 miles (14 km) east of Crescent City.6
  • High Bluff Overlook a pre-approved national park ceremony site for up to 20 participants.3
  • Lost Man Creek Gate a second pre-approved ceremony site, also for up to 20 participants, so it takes the same size of party.3
  • Stout Grove a high-visitation grove that the park says can be difficult to permit, so we raise it early.7

The participant caps decide how many guests can stand with you, so we read them through with you before a date is set.

How we match you with your photographer

Troth Weddings is a network of independent wedding photographers and videographers, built location by location. When you inquire about Redwood Coast, we introduce you to the partner photographer matched to it. We share their recent galleries and films and set up a call. You book directly with them; we stay in the loop until your gallery is delivered.

Partners join by invitation. Before we list anyone we review full weddings, not highlight reels, and how they handle contracts, backups and delivery.

How booking works

  1. Send the form with your date and location.
  2. We reply within one business day with the Redwood Coast price list and the partner's recent work.
  3. Call with the photographer; if it fits, a deposit holds the date.
  4. A short questionnaire about people, places and timing, two weeks before.
  5. The day.
  6. A sneak peek first, then the full gallery and the film on the dates set in your contract.

Good to know on the Redwood Coast

The Humboldt County Clerk-Recorder in Eureka issues marriage licenses8. A public license costs $78 and a confidential one $808; there is no waiting period, and the license stays valid for 90 days. A public license needs one witness, a confidential one none8. Both of you appear together, and the ceremony must take place in California8.

The permits matter more than the paperwork. Redwood National Park requires one for every wedding or elopement: a $100 application fee for a pre-approved site, $200 for anywhere else3, with at least 14 days' notice for the first and 30 days for the rest7. The state parks run their own Special Event Permit, $250 to $300, applied for 45 days to 6 months ahead9. Drones are not permitted in the national park3.

In October the Crescent City station averages 62.1 °F by day and 45.5 °F at night, with 4.67 in of rain2.

Questions couples ask

01How much does it cost to get married in the California redwoods?

The fixed costs are small: a Humboldt County license is $78, or $80 confidential8, and Redwood National Park charges a $100 application fee for its pre-approved ceremony sites or $200 for anywhere else3. State park permits run $250 to $3009. Photography is separate and depends on the date and team, so we send the Redwood Coast price list rather than one figure.

02What is a normal price to pay for a wedding photographer?

There isn't one normal price. It follows the date, the length of the day, whether film is included and how far the team travels, so we don't publish a single figure for every town. Ask for the Redwood Coast price list and it arrives within one business day, with a partner's recent full weddings so you can see what the price buys.

03How do you find the right wedding photographer for the redwoods?

Ask to see complete weddings from the place you are marrying, not highlight reels, and ask how the photographer handles backups and delivery dates. That is how we choose partners. We introduce you to an independent partner photographer matched to the Redwood Coast, share their galleries and films, and set up a call before anything is held.

04What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

Rain is a cool-season story on this coast: the Crescent City station averages 11.51 in in January against 0.19 in in July2. For a winter date we plan a covered fallback, and we photograph the forest wet. Your permit names a date and time, so we agree the fallback with you before the day.

05Do you travel to the Redwood Coast, and is travel included?

Yes. Travel to the coast is built into the quote rather than added afterwards, so the price list you receive is the figure you plan with. We share your partner's recent galleries and films before you speak. Tell us the grove, bluff or beach you are considering and we check it against the permit rules first.

06Can we book photo and video together?

Yes. One team covers both, so nobody steps into the other's frame. Under the national park's permit, photographers and videographers need no permit of their own and are listed as support personnel on yours3. Drones are not permitted in the national park3, so the film is shot from the ground.

Say when.

Tell us the date and the kind of place you have in mind, whether a grove, a bluff or a beach. We reply within one business day with the Redwood Coast price list and a partner's recent work.
