Wedding photographer & videographer in Victoria

Fan Tan Alley narrows to less than 0.9 m (3 ft) between Fisgard Street and Pandora Avenue1, which makes it the tightest frame we use in Victoria. We photograph and film weddings here as one team, from that alley to the harbour and the Strait of Juan de Fuca shore.

In short

We photograph and film weddings in Victoria as one team, with an independent partner photographer matched to Victoria. The City asks for a Wedding Permit Application at least six weeks before a park ceremony2, while the British Columbia licence has no waiting period, so the permit is the long lead item. The price list arrives within one business day.

We cover park ceremonies, harbour-side portraits, small weddings and two-day weekends in Victoria and along the Strait of Juan de Fuca shore.

Collections

Every collection comes as photo, video, or both, with the same team on the day. Half day covers an elopement or a small ceremony and portraits; Full day runs from getting ready to the first hour of the reception; Two days adds a rehearsal dinner, a welcome evening or a next-morning session. Travel to Victoria is built into the quote, not added later.

Prices depend on the date, the team and how far we travel, so we send a price list for Victoria rather than publishing one number for every town. Ask for it below; it arrives within one business day.

Where we shoot in Victoria

Victoria packs parks, a harbour and a heritage core into one small city, and the City names some of its parks as popular wedding locations. We sort the list by what each one allows.

  • Beacon Hill Park a 75 ha park3 on the Juan de Fuca Strait shore, with woodland and shoreline trails, ponds and gardens.
  • Stone Bridge and Rose Garden both in Beacon Hill Park, and both named by the City as popular park wedding locations.2
  • Laurel Point Park a City park that appears on the same list of popular wedding locations.2
  • Inner Harbour lies fully within the City of Victoria and separates downtown from Victoria West.4
  • British Columbia Parliament Buildings home of the Legislative Assembly and the lieutenant governor.5
  • Chinatown the oldest Chinatown in Canada, and the second oldest in North America after San Francisco.6
  • Clover Point a 4 ha waterfront park facing the Strait of Juan de Fuca, owned by the City since 1988.7
  • Fisgard Lighthouse the first lighthouse on Canada's west coast, on Fisgard Island at the mouth of Esquimalt Harbour in Colwood.8

The day

The day,as we shoot it in Victoria

Wedding detail

We plan an April wedding around the City's permit window. The sun rises at 06:23 and sets at 20:04 on Pacific time (UTC−7)9, and ceremonies in City parks run from 10 a.m. to sunset10. The average high at the Gonzales Heights station is 13.5 °C (56.3 °F), with a low of 6.4 °C (43.5 °F)11.

  1. Getting ready, with the details and the film's first frames.
  2. Ceremony at the Rose Garden in Beacon Hill Park, on the City's list of popular locations2. Amplified sound is not allowed in City parks10, so the vows are heard live and recorded on the officiant's lavalier.
  3. Family groups, kept inside the permit's four hours, which include set-up and take-down10.
  4. A walk along the Inner Harbour toward the Parliament Buildings5.
  5. Portraits in Chinatown, and a pass through Fan Tan Alley6.
  6. Clover Point, facing the Strait, for the last light before the 20:04 sunset9.

April is moderately wet, with 36.2 mm of rain11; January is the wettest of the four months in the weather table, at 110.6 mm, and July the driest, at 13.0 mm11. Since a City park ceremony cannot rope off the area or close public access10, we plan the frames around passers-by and keep a covered backup ready. The permit window opens at 10 a.m.10 and the sun sets at 20:049, so in April a late-morning ceremony leaves the whole evening for portraits.

How we match you with your photographer

Troth Weddings is a network of independent wedding photographers and videographers, built location by location. When you enquire about Victoria, we introduce you to the partner photographer matched to it. We share their recent galleries and films and set up a call. You book directly with them; we stay in the loop until your gallery is delivered.

Partners join by invitation. Before we list anyone we review full weddings, not highlight reels, and how they handle contracts, backups and delivery.

How booking works

  1. Send the form with your date and location.
  2. We reply within one business day with the Victoria price list and the partner's recent work.
  3. Call with the photographer; if it fits, a deposit holds the date.
  4. A short questionnaire about people, places and timing, two weeks before.
  5. The day.
  6. A sneak peek first, then the full gallery and the film on the dates set in your contract.

Questions couples ask

01How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer in Victoria?

Once you have a date. For a ceremony in a City park, the Wedding Permit Application is due at least six weeks before the day2, so the permit sets your deadline and the photographer's deposit holds the date while it is processed.

02Do you travel to Victoria, and is travel included?

Yes. Travel to Victoria is built into the quote, not added later, so the price list is the figure you plan with. We introduce you to an independent partner photographer matched to Victoria and share their recent galleries and films before the call.

03Can we book photo and video together?

Yes, as one crew. City parks do not allow amplified sound10, so we rely on what the film does best: a lavalier microphone on the officiant and a recorder alongside, which capture the vows without any speakers. Aerial footage depends on local rules, and we check them before promising any.

04What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

January averages 110.6 mm of rain and October 85.4 mm, against 13.0 mm in July11. From autumn to spring we agree a covered backup, and a park permit is for a booked time, so we decide the call on the morning with you, not at the last minute.

05How many photos do we receive, and when?

It depends on the collection and how long the day runs, and your partner writes the count and delivery dates into the contract. You get a sneak peek first, then the full edited gallery and the film. Ask for the number on your introduction call and have it in writing.

06Can we get the raw files?

Raw files are not part of the collections as we describe them; the Photo collection is the edited gallery with print rights. If they matter to you, say so on the first call with your photographer, since the answer belongs in the contract, and it is better settled before the deposit.

Say when.

Give us the date, or the season you are leaning toward, and whether you picture a garden, the harbour or the shore. We reply within one business day with the Victoria price list and a partner's recent galleries.
