Eloping on Kauai, photographed and filmed

A Kauai elopement is a license, a permit and a short ceremony on one stretch of coast, photographed and filmed by one crew. For a larger guest list, see our Kauai wedding page; here we cover the paperwork, the rules and the half-day plan.

In short

A Kauai elopement needs a Hawaii marriage license and, on state beaches, a DLNR Wiki Permits permit with a two-hour window1. Some sites, such as Hanalei Pier, give no commercial permits at all, so we choose the beach, the season and the light before the date is set.

Eloping on Kauai

An elopement on Kauai is two people, an officiant and a few guests on a public beach. The average event on state shoreline is 10 people, DLNR asks to be contacted before an application for more than 25 to 30, and nothing is exclusive: the public may not be asked to move2.

The half day is built around that. We meet at the beach, walk the ground with the officiant, hold the ceremony inside the permit window, then spend the remaining hours on portraits while the light moves. One crew shoots photo and video, so there is a single schedule, and the film is recorded in natural sound, with the officiant carrying the microphone.

State parks are a different route from state beaches. They need a special use permit requested at least 45 days ahead3, or 90 days when the event has a commercial aspect and may need Board of Land and Natural Resources approval3.

Getting married on Kauai: the paperwork

Every island shares one Hawaii Department of Health license, applied for online with a non-refundable $65 ($60 application plus a $5 portal fee)4. Both of you then meet an agent in person with valid photo ID, no sooner than 30 days before the ceremony4. The license is valid only in Hawaii, proxies are not allowed, and the officiant must hold a Hawaii Department of Health license to perform marriages4. On Kauai, the agent line is (808) 241-34984.

On the beach, terms come from DLNR. A Wiki Permits permit costs 10 cents per square foot per event per day, with a $20 minimum1. Set-up, event and clean-up must fit in two hours, and insurance of at least $500,000 per incident names the State of Hawaii1. Kauai has its own exceptions: Black Pot Beach is under County of Kauaʻi Parks, Hanalei Pier is under the DLNR boating division and gets no commercial permits, Lumahaʻi Beach is open only from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and there is no commercial activity at or near Kukui Heiau2.

Wedding detail

This sample is a January afternoon on the south coast, built on sunrise at 07:19 and sunset at 18:15 on January 158. January is also when Lumahaʻi Beach is off the permit calendar, so it is not in this plan2.

  1. Getting ready and a quiet first look.
  2. The crew walks the beach with the officiant.
  3. The ceremony at Shipwreck Beach (Keoneloa), a Poʻipū-area Wiki Permits site off Poipu Road, inside the two-hour window19; Poʻipū Beach is the second choice.
  4. Couple portraits along the water.
  5. Final frames in low sun, ahead of sunset at 18:158.

Līhuʻe Airport averages a 78.6 °F high and a 66 °F low in January, with 2.78 in of rain7: mild, with showers that pass quickly and light that returns.

Where we shoot an elopement on Kauai

Three beaches and one list of exceptions shape a Kauai elopement.

  • Kauapea (Secret) Beach a Wiki Permits beach site at Kīlauea, also known as Secret Beach. At Kīlauea Bay, Kipapa Heiau at the northern end of the beach is a sacred site and kapu: do not trespass9.
  • Shipwreck Beach (Keoneloa) a Poʻipū-area Wiki Permits beach site off Poipu Road9.
  • Poʻipū Beach the south-shore site fronting the beach park9.
  • Hāʻena State Park the end of the Kuhio Highway, with beaches and the Kalalau Trail trailhead10. A State Parks notice of November 2, 2026 lists it as reopened on October 15, 2026; check current status before planning around it3.
  • Where the rules differ Hanalei Pier, where DLNR issues no commercial permits, and shorelines tied to a lighthouse, where you check with the U.S. Coast Guard2.

Collections

Every collection comes as photo, video, or both, with the same team on the day. Half day covers an elopement or a small ceremony and portraits; Full day runs from getting ready to the first hour of the reception; Two days adds a rehearsal dinner, a welcome evening or a next-morning session. Travel to Kauai is built into the quote, not added later.

Prices depend on the date, the team and how far we travel, so we send a price list for Kauai rather than publishing one number for every town. Ask for it below; it arrives within one business day.

  5. The day.
  6. A sneak peek first, then the full gallery and the film on the dates set in your contract.

Questions about eloping on Kauai

01How much should eloping cost?

It depends on the team, the date and how far we travel, so we send a Kauai price list rather than one number. The fixed costs are small and sourced: the Hawaii license is $654, and a state-beach permit is 10 cents per square foot per event per day, with a $20 minimum1. Coverage is the part that varies.

02Where is the cheapest place to elope?

We do not rank places by price. The license costs the same on every island at $654, and the beach permit is priced the same way wherever you are on state shoreline, at a $20 minimum1. What moves the total is travel and length of coverage, so a short ceremony on a permitted beach keeps both small.

03Do we need witnesses to elope on Kauai?

The Department of Health page we read does not list a witness requirement, so we do not state one. Ask the licensing agent when you meet, since both of you must appear in person and the officiant must hold a Hawaii Department of Health license4. The agent confirms what the signed license needs.

04Can you help us choose a time and a spot for the ceremony?

Yes. The permit allows two hours for set-up, event and clean-up1, and the beach calendar matters: Lumahaʻi runs only from Memorial Day to Labor Day because of surf2. We match the site to the season and the light, and hold a second beach in case the first is closed.

05Can family join us for part of the day?

Yes. The average state-beach event is 10 people, and DLNR wants to hear from you before an application for more than 25 to 302. Events with 26 or more day users in a state park need a group use permit3. Tell us who is coming and we choose the site to match.

Say when.

Tell us the date, who is coming and which side of the island you are drawn to. We reply within one business day with the Kauai price list and a partner's recent work.
