Wedding photographer & videographer on Maui

On Maui the license is the easy part: it costs $65 and has no waiting period1. After that, the lava coast and the crater are ours to photograph and film, with one team on the day and travel in the quote.

In short

We photograph and film weddings and elopements on Maui, with one team on the day and travel in the quote. Hawaii has no marriage waiting period, but each site has its own permit: the National Park Service for Haleakalā, a Wiki Permits permit for state beaches, State Parks elsewhere.

On Maui we cover elopements and small ceremonies, full-day weddings and two-day weekends, in photo, video or both.

Collections

Every collection comes as photo, video, or both, with the same team on the day. Half day covers an elopement or a small ceremony and portraits; Full day runs from getting ready to the first hour of the reception; Two days adds a rehearsal dinner, a welcome evening or a next-morning session. Travel to Maui is built into the quote, not added later.

Prices depend on the date, the team and how far we travel, so we send a price list for Maui rather than publishing one number for every town. Ask for it below; it arrives within one business day.

Good to know on Maui

The Hawaii Department of Health issues the license through agents. Apply online and pay $651. Then meet an agent in person with photo ID, no sooner than 30 days before the ceremony1. The license is void if the ceremony comes more than 30 days after pick-up1. No state residence or U.S. citizenship is needed1.

Permits depend on the land. Haleakalā National Park requires a special use permit, with a $150 application fee and a limit of 25 people2. A ceremony on unencumbered state shoreline needs a Wiki Permits right-of-entry permit, with set-up, event and clean-up inside two hours3. Kahului Airport's average high runs from 82.2 °F in January to 89.2 °F in July4.

The day

Wedding detail

A Maui wedding day is built around a two-hour beach window and a late sun. On April 15 the sun rises at 06:06 and sets at 18:447. A state shoreline permit covers set-up, the event and clean-up inside two hours3, so the ceremony is the fixed point and the portraits fill the light on either side. No arches, bowers, altars or signage are allowed on that sand, only loose flowers, leis and bouquets3, so the frame is the shoreline itself.

  1. Getting ready, details and a first look away from the sand.
  2. The ceremony on a permitted beach, set-up to clean-up inside the window.
  3. Couple portraits on the sand and the black rock at the water's edge.
  4. Last frames in low sun, ahead of sunset at 18:447.

Rain is a winter shower rather than a washout. Kahului Airport averages 2.42 in in January against 0.53 in in July4; April is 1.32 in and October 0.83 in4. State shoreline permits allow no tents3, so the wet-weather plan is a second window or a second site, not cover. If you want the summit instead, a sunrise ceremony in Haleakalā National Park needs a sunrise reservation2, and the summit stands at 10,023 ft5, far above the coastal averages.

Where we shoot on Maui

Maui's ceremony sites split by landowner: the National Park Service on the volcano, State Parks and DLNR on the shoreline. These are the places we plan around.

  • Puʻuʻulaʻula (Haleakalā summit) the summit observation deck at 10,023 ft5, the highest point in the park and on Maui, a sunrise viewpoint with 360-degree views of the crater.
  • Kalahaku Overlook a rocky overlook on the edge of the pali, a 0.1-mile walk, looking over Haleakalā crater and its 14 puʻu8.
  • Leleiwi Overlook a 0.3-mile round trip rising 100 ft to the crater rim9, with views out the Kaupō Gap and down the Koʻolau Gap to the north shore.
  • Kūloa Point, Kīpahulu the Kūloa Loop Trail and the Coastal Trail from Kūloa Point are approved wedding sites in the park's Kīpahulu district2.
  • Mākena State Park 165 acres just south of Wailea with three separate beaches and a dormant volcanic cinder cone10. State Parks issues the permits here11.
  • ʻĪao Valley a stream-cut valley in West Maui, 3.1 miles west of Wailuku, a National Natural Landmark since 197212.
  • Kapalua Bay Beach and Napili Bay Wiki Permits beach sites: two at Kapalua and three around Napili Bay, south of Kapalua13.
  • Baldwin Beach and Hāmoa Beach Wiki Permits sites at Paʻia and on the Hāna side; Hāmoa is reached by stairways only13.

How we match you with your photographer

Troth Weddings is a network of independent wedding photographers and videographers, built location by location. When you inquire about Maui, we introduce you to the partner photographer matched to it. We share their recent galleries and films and set up a call. You book directly with them; we stay in the loop until your gallery is delivered.

Partners join by invitation. Before we list anyone we review full weddings, not highlight reels, and how they handle contracts, backups and delivery.

How booking works

  1. Send the form with your date and location.
  2. We reply within one business day with the Maui price list and the partner's recent work.
  3. Call with the photographer; if it fits, a deposit holds the date.
  4. A short questionnaire about people, places and timing, two weeks before.
  5. The day.
  6. A sneak peek first, then the full gallery and the film on the dates set in your contract.

Questions couples ask

01How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer on Maui?

Book when you set the date, because the permits have lead times of their own. Haleakalā National Park asks for applications at least three weeks ahead, and warns that locations off its approved list can take up to 60 days2. Hawaii State Parks want 45 days, or 90 for commercial events14. A deposit holds the date with the partner.

02Can we book photo and video together on Maui?

Yes, with one crew. On state shoreline, a Wiki Permits permit or a Hawaii Film Office permit covers a photographer, including after a ceremony on private or county land11. Unauthorized commercial activity on public land can bring civil penalties of up to $5,000 for a first offense11, so we check which permit applies to your site.

03What happens if it rains on our wedding day on Maui?

Showers are most likely in winter: Kahului Airport averages 2.42 in in January against 0.53 in in July4. State shoreline permits allow no tents3, so we plan a second window within the two hours, or move portraits to a covered or inland spot once the ceremony is done.

04Do you travel to Maui, and is travel included?

Yes. Travel is built into the quote, and we introduce an independent partner photographer matched to Maui. Some sites ask for extra effort: Hāmoa Beach on the Hāna side is reached by stairways only13, and ʻĪao Valley is 3.1 miles west of Wailuku12. Tell us the site and we plan the drive.

05How many photos do we receive, and when?

The number depends on the length of coverage, so the partner states it in your contract. Every photo collection includes an edited gallery with print rights and a sneak peek within days. With sunset at 18:44 on an April evening7, a late-afternoon ceremony leaves the light just after it for portraits.

Say when.

Tell us the date, whether you want the shoreline or the volcano, and who is coming. We reply within one business day with the Maui price list and a partner's recent work.
