Eloping in Glacier National Park, photographed and filmed
An elopement in Glacier National Park is a permit, a lake shore and a group small enough to fit the site. For a larger guest list, see our Glacier National Park wedding page; here we cover the paperwork and the half-day plan.

In short
A Glacier National Park elopement needs a Park Service permit and a Montana marriage license. The permit window is two hours1, drones are prohibited, and photographers count toward group size, so we choose a small approved lake site and plan the half day around the ceremony.
Eloping in Glacier National Park
The group is the first thing to decide. The park counts photographers and videographers toward group size1, so at Kintla Lake, which is limited to 10 participants2, our crew takes two of those places. An elopement here is the two of you, an officiant and perhaps a witness or two, with the rest of the day left for portraits.
The half day runs around one short ceremony. We walk the site with the officiant, record the vows on the officiant's audio, then use the remaining hours on portraits along the shore. Because a permit covers only two hours1, the ceremony is the fixed point, and the photographs before and after it are made as an ordinary visitor under park rules.
One site rewards effort. Lake Josephine's ceremony spot is a one-mile hike each way, limited to 15 participants and to the dock area2; with no vehicle access, everyone walks in, including the crew.
Getting married in Glacier National Park: the paperwork
The Clerk of District Court in Flathead County (800 S. Main Street, Kalispell) or Glacier County issues the license for $53, with no waiting period and 180 days of validity3. It is valid in any Montana county, but not in another state or country1.
- Glacier County: both of you appear with photo ID showing date of birth. There is no appointment; the office is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, so arrive by 4:30. Cash and checks only. Return the license within 30 days after the ceremony3.
- Flathead County: submit the online application first, then both of you appear to sign and pay $53 (cash, check, money order, or card plus a $2.31 fee)4. Bring proof of age.
- Montana law provides for marriages where no individual acting alone solemnized the marriage; a party to the marriage then completes the certificate5. Glacier County also files a Declaration of Marriage for $53 with two witnesses before the clerk3.
The park has its own paperwork: a special use permit, with a $125 non-refundable application fee1. Apply by email up to one year ahead. The permit window is two hours including arrival, set-up and wrap-up; chairs are allowed only for guests who cannot stand, with one carpet up to 6 by 4 ft, handheld flowers and a small Bluetooth speaker or acoustic instrument1. Arches, tables, runners, thrown rice or petals, sparklers and amplified sound are prohibited1.

The day
A half day in Glacier National Park

This sample is an October morning at a year-round site, built on sunrise at 07:55 and sunset at 18:45 on October 15, computed for Logan Pass8. October at West Glacier averages a 51.7 °F high and a 32.9 °F low7, so the start is cold and the afternoon is mild.
- Getting ready, then a quiet first look in the soft light.
- The crew walks the shoreline with the officiant and places audio.
- The ceremony, inside the permit window.
- Couple portraits along the shore, with the permit time behind us.
- If you want evening light, a short return under visitor rules before sunset at 18:458.
Wildlife can change a plan. At Rising Sun Picnic Area, frequently restricted for wildlife activity, a permit does not allow access during wildlife closures2; we keep a second site ready for any date.
| Month | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 08:22 | 17:06 |
| Apr | 06:44 | 20:26 |
| Jul | 05:48 | 21:33 |
| Oct | 07:55 | 18:45 |
Sunrise and sunset computed for the 15th of each month, local time.8

Collections
Every collection comes as photo, video, or both, with the same team on the day. Half day covers an elopement or a small ceremony and portraits; Full day runs from getting ready to the first hour of the reception; Two days adds a rehearsal dinner, a welcome evening or a next-morning session. Travel to Glacier National Park is built into the quote, not added later.
Prices depend on the date, the team and how far we travel, so we send a price list for Glacier National Park rather than publishing one number for every town. Ask for it below; it arrives within one business day.

Questions about eloping in Glacier National Park
01Do we need witnesses to elope in Glacier National Park?
The county pages we read list witnesses only for the Declaration of Marriage route, which Glacier County files for $53 with two witnesses before the clerk3. The standard license pages list none. Confirm with the clerk which route you are using, and tell us who is coming, because every participant counts toward the site limit1.
02Can you help us choose a time and a spot for the ceremony?
03How long does an elopement session take?
A half day collection covers getting ready, the ceremony and portraits. The permitted ceremony is capped at two hours, including arrival, set-up and wrap-up1. Portraits made before and after it are shot under ordinary visitor rules, which is how a short permit still fills a half day.
04Can family join us for part of the day?
Say when.
Tell us the date, who is coming and which lake you are drawn to. We reply within one business day with the Glacier National Park price list and a partner's recent work.
